I just completed my 200hr Yoga Teacher Training at Karma Yoga Center in Denver and it was the best decision I ever made. Here are 10 reasons why:
1) EXPAND LIFE’S TOOLBOX
What comes to mind when you think of yoga? Zen? Peaceful? Meditating monks? Exercise? While it might be a great workout, it’s no secret yoga provides a sense of calmness and clarity. YTT is loaded with a multitude of skills and practical application to handle life. Feeling stressed, anxious, or have low energy? Learn specific pranayama (yogic breath work), asana (yoga poses), and meditation to combat these states of being and anything else life throws at us. There’s also a good chance you’ll acquire tools from Ayurvedic medicine and learning to balance chakras.
2) KICKSTART A YOGA HABIT
Do you love yoga and wish you did it more often? Are you interested but don’t know a lot? Or maybe you do a lot of yoga and already know a lot. Regardless, YTT is a great way to kick start a new yoga habit or grow your current yoga practice. Depending on your program requirements, you’ll likely find yourself immersed in yoga 3-5 times a week for the duration of training, and any half or whole days included your training program adds extra fuel to the fire!
3) BUILD STRENGTH AND FLEXIBILITY
This shouldn’t be a main reason to have a yoga practice, but it’s a bonus! I should note, results will vary person to person, depending on your current lifestyle. Personally, I experienced muscle definition in new places and can’t imagine going back to my old body! My flexibility and stamina have also improved. I feel strong!
4) NEW FRIENDSHIPS
Creating authentic, strong, lifelong friendships is a REAL possibility in YTT. This is especially true if your program cultivates a loving, respectful and uplifting space for this to occur. I was fortunate in my program to meet ten other AMAZING peers, connecting to each on a personal and group level I’ve never experienced before.
5) GROW AS A HUMAN BEING
If you strive to be a good person and grow as an individual, do YTT! Diving into the depths of yoga is all about progression, compassion, mindfulness, speaking your truth, stepping into your power, connecting to source, self love, finding your path, and moving forward to empower others to do the same. Growing as an individual is beautiful and we need good people sharing their goodness in the world.
6) CONNECT TO THE POWER OF SERVICE
Yoga instills a desire to be of service to others and act selflessly from our hearts. Wow. What if the whole world operated this way? While there’s a minimal requirement to fulfill Seva (service, volunteer work), YTT pulls at the heartstrings and inspires students to always be of service to others. Where can I serve my community, friend or partner? Service ties in nicely to the whole love and compassion thing yoga has going for it. I can attest YTT cracked my heart open a bit more to this concept.
7) OPEN YOURSELF TO NEW OPPORTUNITIES
Like everything in life, a new experience opens to a multitude of possibilities. Maybe you step into YTT with no intention to teach yoga or maybe you want to be a full time yoga teacher. Whether you never teach, teach one class a week, sub or become a full time yoga teacher, the opportunities to incorporate yoga into your life are endless.
8) FIND ENRICHED COMMUNITY
In addition to making friends with program peers, YTT allows you to build a bigger community with like-minded beings. This is especially true if your program is through a strong, local studio already rooted in the community. Strengthening community with program teachers and other studio goers is quite lovely. You never know who you’ll meet or what opportunities to network and connect will come along.
9) IT’S RELATIVELY INEXPENSIVE
Let’s do the math. YTT is around $2000-$3500, depending on the program. Let’s say your program costs $2500. For 200 hours of yoga training, that’s less than $13 per hour. That’s cheaper than the cost of attending a single yoga class! It’s a small cost per hour, considering YTT will drastically change your life for better! Depending on your program, unlimited yoga classes or other discounts might also be included for the duration of training.
10) YOGA TEACHER ‘PERKS’
Lots of companies offer discounts to Registered Yoga Teachers (check out Yoga Alliance’s website for a list of companies). Even if teaching yoga isn’t your full time gig, it can be a great hobby to earn a little extra cash. Some studios might offer yoga teachers free yoga in exchange for teaching or subbing classes. Lastly, finishing a 200hr Yoga Teacher Training is something to be proud of and calling yourself a yoga teacher is absolutely a cool ‘perk’!
The end of a 200hr Yoga Teacher Training is actually just the beginning. Are you ready? Get out there and do it! As a bias, I highly recommend Karma Yoga Center in Denver if you’re looking for a wonderful YTT program. Tell them Heather sent ya :)
